Revival of a 150 year old farmhouse.

Farmhouse Revival

Location: Purua, Northland, New Zealand

Project Type: Rural Home

Site: Rural Farmland

Status: Completed

Date: 2025

Project Overview

This project involved the comprehensive restoration and renovation of a 150-year-old farmhouse, transforming an ageing rural dwelling into a warm, comfortable, and highly functional family home.

The client was committed to preserving the building's historic character and handcrafted charm, while addressing the comfort, performance, and maintenance challenges common to homes of this age. The design carefully balanced conservation and renewal, retaining significant original features wherever possible while introducing discreet modern interventions that support contemporary living.

The result is a home that honours its history while providing a vastly improved day-to-day living experience.

Character Preservation

Integration Of Old & New

Character Preservation

Retaining the farmhouse's historic character was a primary objective throughout the project.

Original features, proportions, and architectural details were carefully restored and preserved wherever practical, ensuring the building maintained its authentic identity.

The renovation celebrates the craftsmanship and history of the original home while extending its life for future generations.

Comfort & Performance

Integration Of Old & New

Character Preservation

A key goal of the project was dramatically improving comfort without compromising character.

Upgraded insulation, improved airtightness, and carefully integrated modern building systems help create a healthier and more energy-efficient living environment.

These interventions were designed to remain largely invisible, allowing the home's historic qualities to remain the focus.

Integration Of Old & New

Integration Of Old & New

Integration Of Old & New

The renovation required a careful balance between preservation and modernisation.

New elements were designed to complement the existing farmhouse, creating a clear yet harmonious relationship between original and contemporary work.

This approach allows the home to meet the needs of modern living while maintaining a strong connection to its past.
