Project Overview
Nestled amongst native forest on a steep Northland hillside, this small retreat was designed to provide an immersive experience of living within the canopy.
Rather than clearing the site or imposing a dominant architectural form, the project sought to work with the existing landscape, allowing the building to sit lightly amongst the trees. Elevated above the forest floor, the cabin creates the feeling of occupying a treehouse, surrounded by native vegetation, birdsong, and filtered sunlight.
The compact footprint encouraged a careful and efficient use of space, prioritising simplicity, connection to nature, and a sense of retreat from everyday life. Large areas of glazing frame views into the surrounding bush, while outdoor living spaces extend the usable area beyond the building itself.
The result is a modest yet memorable place that celebrates its unique setting, offering a rare opportunity to experience Northland's native forest from within rather than merely looking at it.

Protecting the surrounding forest was a primary design driver from the outset.
The building is elevated on timber piles to minimise excavation and disturbance to tree roots, soil, and natural drainage patterns.
Careful site selection allowed the studio to nestle amongst existing trees while avoiding unnecessary vegetation removal.
